Couples dreaming to have babies to enjoy parenthood in their life find themselves fighting with infertility these days. There are many factors affecting fertility in both men and women due to lifestyle changes.
These factors include smoking, pollution, junk food, alcoholism, and poor diet. Also, excessive stress may result in infertility as it affects the functions of hypothalamus glands which regulate the hormones to release an egg from ovaries.
Infertility issues, especially in women, results in affecting relationships with family, friends and other acquaintances. Nevertheless, every woman’s problem is different from others and as such should be treated accordingly.
With advances in medical science, there are infertility treatments through which infertility can be diagnosed and cured. Some of the factors/scenarios that can result in infertility in both men and women include-
- Age of the female
With an increase in a woman’s age, the number of eggs produced by ovaries decreases. Besides, aging also causes a decrease in the quality of eggs. Infertility is considered after attempting for pregnancy for 6 months or more without any success when the woman is aged 35 or above.
- Infrequent menstrual periods
In normal cases, regular menstruation occurs in a woman every 21 to 35 days that indicates a healthy reproductive cycle. However, in case the menstrual cycle of the woman is 35 days or above then it shows that she has a problem with ovulation. Ovulation of egg is important in pregnancy and as such regular menstrual cycles provide higher chances of pregnancy.
- Uterine fibroids or endometrial polyps
Fibroids that notch the endometrial cavity and endometrial polyps interfere with the lining of the uterus and embryo implantation resulting in a decreased pregnancy rate.
- PCOD – Polycystic Ovary Disease
PCOD refers to a condition leading to the development of small cysts in the ovaries of the woman due to hormonal disorders that result in a lack of ovulation. PCOD may also result in acne, infertility, and excess hair growth.
- Semen abnormalities
In case, the male partner has low sperm count and abnormal sperms which are unable to reach egg results in infertility.

IVF is a process of fertilization that involves helping sperm to fertilize the egg and then implant fertilized egg or eggs in the uterus. IVF treatment is suggested for women who are facing infertility issues and also the failure of infertility treatment in conditions such as-
- Unexplained infertility
- IUI failures
- Frequent pregnancy loss
- Ovulatory dysfunction
The following steps are involved in In-Vitro Fertilization
- Preparation phase
The couple is advised to undergo several tests that include blood tests, hormonal tests, vaginal scan, and semen analysis to detect any abnormalities or any pre-existing diseases. The woman or female partner need to take some ovarian/hormonal stimulating drugs for a period of 1 to 3 months before the IVF treatment
- Ovarian stimulation through hormonal injection
The size of an egg stimulation starts for ovulation on the 2nd or 3rd day of the menstrual cycle. An intravaginal scan is performed to analyze the follicle and uterus along with follicle count in the ovaries. Also, few hormonal tests are carried out to detect any hormonal imbalances.
The infertility specialists may also prescribe medication to start ovarian stimulation in the form of injections that include – Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing hormone (LH). The infertility doctors may also prescribe several protocols such as minimal stimulation IVF, Agonist, and natural cycle IVF according to the body responses of the concerned patient/woman.
- Monitoring the stimulation response
The infertility doctors would also with the regular ultrasound tests, hormone tests like E2 and LH levels monitor the size of eggs. A typical ovarian stimulation period lasts between 7 to 14 days that may vary from woman to woman.
- Egg retrieval
When the follicle reaches the desired size, a trigger injection helps to end the stimulation phase and get eggs ready for ovulation. The ovulation occurs after 24 hours of HCG injection and IVF procedure is then scheduled after 35 to 36 hours after HCG injection under general anesthesia. By using ultrasound, the infertility specialists then insert a thin, hollow needle into the uterus and hold the eggs with the needle connected to a suction device.
- Embryo Culture
The collected eggs are then mixed with the partner’s sperm which is called an insemination procedure. The sperm and eggs are preserved in a container for fertilization. These fertilized eggs divide and transform as embryos. Within 3 to 5 days of egg collection, one or more embryos are inserted into the uterus of the woman.
- After IVF treatment
After 15 days of embryo transfer, the infertility specialists advise the patient to go for a blood test to confirm the achievement of pregnancy. A successful IVF treatment results in embryos getting attached to the uterus as happens in the case of the natural process of conceiving.
The above mentioned steps are carried out at KIC-Chennai Infertility Centre for a successful IVF treatment.
