Cervical mucus is a form of vaginal discharge produced by your cervix and controlled by estrogen and progesterone hormones. Mucus is dense and sparse at the beginning of your menstrual period. As mucin proteins bind together to produce a mesh-like structure that acts as a barrier against sperm and other agents.
Water levels rise when estrogen levels rise, but mucin levels decrease. This relaxes the mucin barrier, causing a woman’s cervical mucus to thin out. Sperm can pass freely into the cervix thanks to a thin layer of cervical (watery) mucus.
