A female’s ovary contains about 1-2 million/oocytes (eggs) at the time of her birth. A woman is not capable of making new eggs, and in fact, there is a continuous decline in the total number of eggs each month. By the time, a female enters puberty, only about 25% of her lifetime total egg pool remains, around 300,000.

The large number of eggs that are used each month account for the steady decline in the female’s total egg pool that occurs from birth to menopause. The declining egg quality and fertility comes naturally with age. Therefore, it can be said that fertility is driven by egg quality.

In case of males, their sperm health is directly proportional to its fertility aspects. The quantity (at least 20 million sperm per millimeter), movement, morphology of the sperm determines the male fertility and its ability in fertilizing the egg resulting in pregnancy in female partner.

From a logical viewpoint, the role of sperm in Assisted Reproductive Technology is closely linked with its ability to fertilize female oocytes. Fertilization is possible as long as the genetic material from the sperm is transferable into the female oocytes. With advances in assisted reproductive technologies more ways are available for obtaining good healthy sperms even in case with low sperm count, so more and more male fertility issues can be treated.
