Surrogate parenting is when a commissioning couple/infertile couple or patients or a single parent engages the services of a Surrogate mother/gestational carrier to carry a baby for them by undergoing IVF or Test tube baby treatment
Types of Surrogate Parenting – What are they
This procedure takes place in a Clinical Setting in a fertility clinic and involves, Fertility experts, Embryologists, Nurses, Technicians etc. a legal expert and counsellor will also be part of the arrangement
Gestational Surrogacy
Gestational surrogacy is when the eggs are from the Genetic mother and the sperm is from the genetic father and the embryo formed from a fusion of their gametes is transferred to the surrogate mother who gestates the pregnancy for them
In this procedure, the surrogate mother has no genetic link to the child and as per law, she is not considered as the parent to the child born through surrogacy.
Sometimes when the infertile couple cannot provide their own gametes, the services of an egg/oocyte donor or rarely a sperm donor may also be utilized by the clinic after due consent
Gestational surrogacy is common in almost all progressive countries of the world and is considered to be a clinical treatment for those infertile couples who have exhausted all other treatment options.
Gestational surrogacy is also a treatment option for single men and women to have their own child if they are not looking to adopt
